Editor’s note: It is still 2016, yet their have been signs that the embers of the 2019 race have already started being fanned. In 2019, it will be time for Nigerians to head to polling booths and choose who they want to take up the reins. Of course, it is a bit too early to be sure, who and who will be in the running for the 2019 presidential elections. Yet, we can already tell that the following men will be top contenders.

 1. President Muhammadu Buhari (APC)

President Buhari is currently on his first term as president, and anyone familiar with the Nigerian political terrain, will know that the incumbent goes a long way in determining who will rule the country next. While, Buhari will be 77 years old come 2019, will age stop the president from considering a second term? No one knows for certain, but one thing we know for certain is this, Buhari might rule Nigeria again in 2019.

 2. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar (APC)

Former Vice president Atiku Abubakar might have his eyes set on the 2019 presidency, although there have been no formal announcement, he has been in the public eye recently, with his media team working overtime to endear him to the public, with some success. Atiku’s website and Facebook page are filled with pictures and press releases, cameras are dodging his footsteps, the former vice president is obviously gearing up for something and our guess, is its the 2019 presidency. He also stormed the national secretariat of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Monday, July 18, 2016 to hold a closed door meeting with the APC national chairman, John Odigie-Oyegun.

 3. Senator Ben Murray Bruce (PDP)

Senator Bruce, who was elected to the Senate of Nigeria in March 2015, and currently represents the Bayelsa East constituency, in Bayelsa state, Nigeria, may have designs on the 2019 presidency.

The Senator who is behind what he called the ‘commonsense revolution’ and the ‘Buy Naija to grow the naira’ movement has been a very loud voice in the country over how things could be done better. ‘Ben Bruce 2019′ is a slogan that has appeared on several websites. It is quite obvious that the senator is nursing ambition for the presidential seat come 2019.

4. Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso (APC)

Rabiu Kwankwaso served as the governor of Kano state twice from 1999–2003 and 2011–2015. Interestingly, he ran for president on the APC platform but had lost the party’s presidential ticket to Muhammadu Buhari, ending in second place, in 2015. He is one of those who are likely to try again in 2019 as there are rumors he is being considered by the party.

5. Jimi Agbaje (PDP)

Jimi Agbaje was the governorship candidate of the PDP in the 2015 gubernatorial election that he lost. Agbaje has promised that he will lead the party back to winning ways if elected chairman of the party at the Portharcourt Convention. Jimi Agbaje while speaking with journalists shortly after he picked the nomination forms for the chairmanship position of the party in Abuja, hinted at his plans to lead the party to the 2019 election.
